How Do I Dress Up A Basic Outfit? | Five Things

I am the type of person that doesn’t really like to go ‘all out’ with everyday outfits. Most of the time I just wear a basic shirt with a pair of jeans and a cardigan or jacket over it. I don’t wear this just to ‘play it safe’ with my outfits, but just because I don’t find clothing items with a nice prints that often. So instead of waiting for something that I really like, I just dress up basic clothing pieces with other clothing items and accessories. Already gotten curious?

First you have to have a basic outfit. A basic outfit for me is a good quality white (or black) shirt with a pair of jeans. I prefer shirts with a scoop neck like the ones from Esprit. Those are really good quality and not even that expensive. And for a pair of jeans I prefer really dark blue or grey jeans (surprise haha).

This first way I dress up a basic outfit is with a leather jacket. It could be a light pastel color (like I wore in my last outfit post) or a simple black leather jacket. The pink color makes your outfit look cute and girly. And with a black leather jacket you make your outfit a bit more edgy.

I’ve seen this a lot last summer and I really really really liked (and still do) this trend: the kimono. Especially the floral printed ones. I’ve never bought one myself but I definitely will this summer just because they are really easy to pair with any outfit.

With accessories like jewelry pieces you can also change the look of your outfit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big statement necklace, a couple small bracelets or some different styles of rings. I prefer to wear a couple small minimalistic bracelets with a watch (like I wore in this blog post). But it doesn’t need to be jewelry; it could also be a floppy hat (like I wore here) or a printed/colored scarf.

This has to be one of my favorite ways to dress up a basic outfit and that’s with wearing a different pair of jeans. It doesn’t matter if it’s a colored pair or a high waisted pair. In summer I really like to wear pastel colored jeans with a white basic shirt. Here’s an example of how I would wear it and after seeing this post, it actually makes me miss summer a lot…

Another really simple way to dress up your basic outfit is with wearing a flannel. Flannels have been very popular lately and I think almost everybody has one in their closet. It could be any color you’d like to wear. If it’s a little bit warmer, you could also tie it around your waist instead of wearing it.

Of course there are a lot more ways to dress up an outfit. You could also start off your basic outfit with a white shirt (like me) and a skirt instead of jeans. This basic outfit, paired with one of the things I just talked about, will make your outfit look a lot more interesting instead of basic and boring (which are two words we don’t like to hear together haha). Do you also like to wear basic outfits? What is your favorite way to dress up your outfit?

Love,

Neeltje

  1. Leuk artikel!
