A Camera Is A Save Button For The Minds Eye | Event: Unseen Photo Fair, Amsterdam

I’ve been to lots of different festivals but never to a photography fair / festival. When I saw something about Unseen Photo Fair on Facebook, it caught my eye. I went on their website and found out it was a yearly event with lots of different artists and photographers. I immediately decided to buy tickets and get some friends to join me on Saturday 19 September! Last weekend it was finally time to go the Westergasfabriek and see all the beautiful photographs. I wanted to share some of the photos I took and my experience at Unseen Photo Fair 2015!

I had never been to the Westergasfabriek but I had seen so many photos of it and those got me really excited. When we entered the grounds, we walked past some different bakery shops, cafes and also some art works. Above you see a exposition from FOAM talent (I’ve actually made a blog post about FOAM before). It was called The Embarrassment Show and there was actually a list of some rules. In between the rules I saw this awesome quote:

“As a creative you’ll be called an idiot at least once a day, that’s okay.”

After walking around for a little bit, we finally entered the Westergasfabriek. There were two different places with photographs: the Transformatorhuis and Gashouder itself. We started in the Transformatorhuis with the Unseen Collection.

The Unseen Collection is a unique collection of works for prices up to 1,000 euros, contributed by galleries participating at Unseen Photo Fair 2015. At least, that’s what it says on their website haha. There were some really amazing photographs in this collection. I especially liked the ones below. All of the little frames were taken in different types of lighting, which made all of them look a little different but really good together.

A festival / fair like this is the perfect way to get inspired and I definitely saw a couple of things where I was like: I could maybe try to do something like that. That’s the reason why I like to go to festivals like this. One of the things I really liked were these magazines, which you can see below. There was a different sized triangle on the front of every single one and it looked like they scraped the pages out of it. I don’t really know how to explain it but it made me think about all of the magazines I have in my room. Maybe it’s time for a DIY with them?

I think the photographs below were my favorite throughout the whole fair. I don’t know if you’re able to tell but the airplane in the middle (with the blue background) looks a little different. It has sausages as wings haha. Me and my friends loved these photos so much just because they’re funny and you don’t have to take them so serious like some other ones.

At Unseen Photo Fair is also a book market. As you might know, I am really into coffee table books with lots of photographs in it. Well, this was the place to find books like these. Unfortunately it was very busy here but I did saw some really nice books I would like to have on my coffee table when I own a house haha.

Here’s a little story for you: I was really frustrated because it was really busy, people kept walking in to my shot. Just like this woman with her big camera. She kept talking about: Oh I could do that as well. And I was just standing there like: Sure… I think a lot of people say this when they see art (I am guilty of that as well) but no, you didn’t think or do it first so don’t keeping saying it. She was really annoying me but I do like how the photo turned out haha.

Of course I had to include the most beautiful photo my friends and I found and that’s this black and white one below. I don’t know why but I just wanted to take it home and put it on my wall. Maybe it is because the little girl is climbing on this rock and I immediately thought of a motivational meaning that would fit this.

That was already our day at Unseen! I think I definitely want to go there again next year just to get some inspiration from all of the different photographs. Btw, if you’re in Amsterdam you should definitely to the Westergasfabriek because it’s a great place to take photos or to relax. Have you ever heard about Unseen Photo Fair? Would you want to go here as well?

Love,

Neeltje

  1. Beautiful photos. I really want to go to a photography festival some time, it looks so calming and beautiful. Hope you have an amazing day. Xo, Teng itsjustteng.wordpress.com

  2. ABsolutely stunning photos, plus the event looks so good! I can’t stand it when people judge photos and make criticism just so that they can amplify THEIR abilities — stop, people are talented too. Anyway, I’d love to go to this festival one day, though I’m neither photograph-y or art-y, ha!
