Little Things Mean A Lot… | Lot & De Walvis, Leiden

“I should definitely go there” is what comes to my mind every single time when I cycle to the centre of Leiden to go to work, meet up with friends or whatever, and I see Lot & de Walvis. But when I meet up with friends, we never think of going to Lot & de Walvis. So when I had some free time in between my exams, I made plans to go to catch up with Elba and go out for lunch. That’s when I immediately thought of Lot & de Walvis. And yes, we ended up going there (because I really wanted to go). Since this is a hotspot everyone should visit, I thought I should share my experience at Lot & de Walvis with you! 🍴

Lot & de Walvis | Haven 1, Leiden

Lot & de Walvis is not located in the centre of Leiden. It’s just outside of the centre, in the harbor of Leiden. I think a restaurant near the water is always good. This is because the view from the restaurant is always beautiful and in summer, you can enjoy the sun on their terrace near the water.

When you enter the restaurant, it feels like you enter a whole different world. It looks like you’re on holiday in Ibiza or something like that. But at the same time it feels very cozy. Above you can see a corner that’s a bit higher than the rest of the restaurant with different kind of chairs and couches. I absolutely love how this looks. Doesn’t it remind you of a living room? When you walk a little bit further you enter the part of the restaurant where Elba and I sat down to have lunch.

As you can see there were some other cozy tables near the window (and since we like to have a good view), this is where we sat down. Let me tell you, when a restaurant has tables of light colored wood, I am already sold. This sounds so random but I really like the look of light colored wood haha. Anyways, we sat down and got a fresh mint tea. This has been one of my favorite drinks for the past couple of months so of course that’s what I got.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who does this but before I go to a restaurant, I always go online to check their menu. So that’s what I also did with Lot & de Walvis. I noticed that you can choose from so many different dishes. They serve breakfast, lunch, bites and dinner. But if you want to have something for lunch which is actually a breakfast dish, you can also order it for lunch (hello american pancakes!).

In the photos above you can see the selection we ordered. For some reason my friends and I always end up ordering the same thing, no exception for Elba and me. We both got the salad with gamba’s. I am telling you, this was the best thing I’ve eaten in a very very long time. Elba and I are still talking about the food we got haha. If you like gamba’s, I would definitely recommend this dish. You can order a small (which I got since I’m a baby) or normal size. With that I wanted some bread (because I love bread with a salad) so we also ordered the bread and dips. The cutest thing is, the bread comes in a paper bag. It’s all about the small things just like the quote outside on the window says: “Little things mean a lot”

After reading all of this, I think you get why I wanted to share Lot & de Walvis with you. In the near future I will definitely go there for lunch, a bite, dinner or maybe even breakfast (give me those american pancakes). I definitely want to have the salad with gamba’s again but I also would like to try something new. Btw, it’s also a great spot to sit and work while enjoying some great food. If you’re interested in visiting this hotspot, you can find Lot & de Walvis at Haven 1 in Leiden. What do you think of this hotspot? Would you want to visit Lot & de Walvis?

Love,

Neeltje
