Last year I made a winter inspired DIY with Eline. In this blog post we showed you a very easy way how to make your own pillows. A couple of weeks ago I felt like creating something new again and I went on the search for some fabrics. While I was in Copenhagen, I already got one that I wanted to use and with that, I bought two other ones at a small fabric store in Leiden. On Pinterest I started looking for things I could make with the fabrics and that’s when I saw these cute pouches. And yes, in this blog post I will show you how you can make these different size pouches yourself! ✂️
Of course there are some things you need if you want to create this DIY as well. You’ll need: fabric (of your choice), thread (in colors you like), zippers (color and size are up to you) sciccors, a measuring tape, a sewing machine (or a neadle if you don’t own a sewing machine), pins and other accessoires you want to use or add to your pouches.
When you’ve chosen your fabrics, threads, zippers and accessoires, I would recommend going on the internet (on websites such as Pinterest, like I did) and looking for the type of pouches you want to create. I chose to keep it simple because why make something very difficult when you can also make it easy? This image is what I used as an example for the pouches.
I started with the biggest pouch, kind of a clutch size. I don’t have any measurements of what my pouches are because I just chose what I thought would look good with the fabric. For the first one I chose to use the cactus fabric, which I got in Copenhagen. Lay out the fabric on a flat surface. Since the cactus print is big, I chose to just cut two pieces out of the fabric that I liked the best.
After that you have to lay the two pieces of fabric on top of each other with the print facing each other. It’s kind of like it’s inside out. This is very important, otherwise the print of your pouch will be on it inside of your pouch and you don’t want that haha. To make sure they don’t move when you’re sewing it together, I would recommend pinning it together. Now you can get your sewing machine out (or your needle and thread) and start sewing the sides (not all of the way to the top) and bottom together (just use the basic running stitch when you’re doing it by hand).
When the sides and bottom are sewed together, you can put the zipper at the top and pin it to one side of your pouch. Now you can sew that side of the zipper to the pouch. It gets a little hard to explain but now you have to open the zipper, pin it to the other side and then you can sew the zipper to the pouch. Cut the excess of the fabric from the corners of your pouch, otherwise your pouch will look very weird. And now it is finally time to turn the pouch inside out so you can finally see the print of your pouch. Make sure to iron it so it gets the right shape and you’re done! 👝
This was such a fun DIY to make! In the end I made a makeup, pencil, clutch and money pouch. If you want to spice it up a little bit, you can also add some accessoires like a ribbon. I added one to the cactus pouch, which is kind of like handle so you can hold it like clutch. Or add the ribbon to the zipper so it is easier to open the pouch. I already have some ideas for a next DIY and this might include some of my favorite things to buy 🌵… Have you ever made something like this? What type of pouch would you like to make?
